The Charm of an Old Jug: Vintage Pieces.
Vintage Pieces for Flowers. There is something about flowers in an old jug that a perfectly matched vase can never quite manage. Perhaps it is the softened glaze, the generous shape, or the feeling that it has been sitting on somebody’s kitchen table for decades.
Whatever the reason, it is a pairing we love: fresh flowers and something with a past.
A vintage vessel need not be grand. A simple earthenware jug, a little glass bottle or a timeworn pottery vase can bring just as much character to a room as a more elaborate piece. The pleasure is in finding a shape you enjoy, then letting the flowers settle into it.
For a relaxed arrangement, begin with a few stems of foliage to give the flowers somewhere to rest. Add your larger blooms, then tuck smaller stems between them. Leave a little breathing room. Not every flower needs to face the front, and a stem leaning gently over the edge is often the nicest part.
Soft pinks and creams sit beautifully against aged pottery. Richer autumn shades can look wonderful in dark earthenware, while clear glass lets the stems become part of the arrangement.
There is one practical consideration: older pottery is not always watertight. Test it somewhere safe before placing it on furniture, or use a separate watertight container inside. Keep precious or delicate pieces for display rather than risking water damage.
The best combinations rarely look as though they were bought together. They feel gathered over time, a favourite jug, a handful of flowers, a corner of the house made lovely.
At Lavender and Grey, that meeting of flowers and old things is very much our sort of decorating.
