An autumn bouquet in muted reds, amber and gold with grasses and faded foliage on a country florist’s workbench

A Bouquet With Someone in Mind.

We rather like bouquets that feel as though they belong to someone. Not simply a collection of lovely flowers, but something you can imagine on their kitchen table, beside their favourite chair or tucked into an old jug.

That is where we like to begin. Tell us a little about the person the flowers are for. Perhaps they love their garden, have a weakness for faded pinks, or would always choose something loose and gathered over anything too neat.

You need not know the names of the flowers. “Nothing too formal” tells us quite a lot. So does “she loves autumn” or “their house is full of old things”. Those little details give us something to work with.

At this time of year, we find ourselves drawn to warmer colours: soft reds, amber and old gold, with grasses, turning leaves and faded foliage woven through. There is something lovely about those slightly weathered shades. They sit so comfortably with old wood, pottery and the softer light of an autumn afternoon. A little movement too.

Of course, autumn colours are not for everyone. If the person you have in mind loves quiet creams or dusty pinks, tell us. The season can lend its texture without deciding every colour.

Then there is the card. A few words in your own voice, a shared memory, a thank-you or simply “thought of you”. Nothing terribly polished is needed.

For us, that is the pleasure of sending flowers: choosing something lovely with a particular person in mind, and letting them know how much you care.
